My first Korean meal was tuna with vegetables in a spicy red sauce with rice. It was delicious. though things are a bit saltier (fish salty, you know) than I like it, I am very excited about eating out all the time. It is pretty cheap to eat out and the portions are great.
I went to E-Mart, the grocery store (kind of a small fred meyer). What an amazing place! So many whole fish, octupus, and things I could not identify in the meat section. Most everything is in Korean (obviously) but from pictures and the glints of english here and there I could pick up what was going on. Two exciting things: They have some important spices that Iwas not sure I would be able to find and they had an organic section!! Global economy folks. I think I will try to make food part for breakfast and some lunches and eat dinner out, since I will probably be getting out of classes around 11 pm most days. It is a crazy schedule shift. Good thing I am already jetlagged, so shiting schedules was going to happen anyway!
Last night was my introduction to Changwon nightlife. I had a great time. The people that I work with took me out to a late dinner and soju (which is like sweet vodka, very easy to drink). We then went to the two international bars. No microbrews. Nothing but budlight style beer and lots of hard A. I will survive. Both bars reminded me of the German bar that I worked at in Tuebingen. Loud, American music, cigarette smoke, and dim lighting. Americans, Brits, and a few locals playing pool, darts, or just sitting around talking and hanging out until the wee hours of the morning. Before I knew it, it was 5 am and time to go home. Granted, I had taken a few naps the previous day, but I couldn't believe how late it was! Everything is within walking distance and Changwon is a very safe city. People are out and about until late and all are in good spirits.
I did not bring my camera, unfortunately, so I will have to post pictures when I do. Hope things are going well back home!
